Asghar Farhadi wins his second Oscar



In the 89th Annual Academy Award, Asghar Farhadi, an alumnus of TMU in the field of theatre, won his second Oscar for his movie "the salesman" for best foreign language film.

Anoushe Ansari and Firouz Naderi took the stage on behalf of Asghar Farhadi to read his statement.

In his message, Farhadi thanked the academy for selecting him for the second time and apologized for not attending the ceremony. In part of his message, he wrote: "My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and all those whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.”

Asghar Farhadi, an Iranian film director and screenwriter, was born in Homayoun Shahr, a district of Isfahan in May 1972. He is a graduate of theatre with a BA in Dramatic Arts from Tehran University and MA in Stage Direction from Tarbiat Modares University. He began his cinema related activities when he was only 13 years old.

In 1986, Farhadi began his professional career at Young Cinematic Association of Isfahan and jointly with Hatamikia wrote the screenplay for Low Heights Movie in 2002.

His film"A Separation" premiered on 9 February 2011 at the 29th Fajr International Festival in Tehran and received critical acclaim from the Iran Society of Film Critics.  On 15 February 2011, it also played in competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, which earned him a Golden Bear for best film, making it the first Iranian film to win that award. The actors and actresses of this film also received the Silver Bear from Berlin Film Festival.

In 2012 Annual Golden Globe Award, "A Separation" became the first Iranian movie to win an Oscarfor the best foreign language film at the 84th edition of the Academy Awards. This marked Farhadi as the first Iranian to have won an Academy Awardin any of the competitive categories.

On 26 February 2017, he won his second Oscar for Best Foreign Film for The Salesmanat the 89th Academy Awards. Iran, Germany, Hungary, Argentine, Austria, Swiss, and former Czech Republic are the countries which have won two Oscar Awards for best Foreign Films. 

The award on Sunday places Farhadi in the company of renowned foreign directors like Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sicaand Ingmar Bergmanwho have received more than one Oscar Award.
